Minnesota Comparable Worth Issues Attorney

Comparable Worth Matters

Comparable worth is a term used in the legal field that refers to the significance of equal pay.  Comparable worth means that employers are paying their employees comparable pay for similar skills, knowledge, and expertise, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, age, etc.  Comparable worth is put into place to ensure that employees are paid based on experience, knowledge, education and the like, rather than being paid based on connections that an employee may have, what they look like, etc.

Pay Equity in Detail

Comparable worth issues are unfortunately all too prevalent in the workplace.  Employers often attempt to get away with compensating employees with less money than they are qualified to be earning.  We most often see these cases with migrant workers, or with jobs that are often perceived as jobs “for women”.  Comparable worth measures the economic value of various positions by use of an evaluation program.  The evaluation program is unbiased, gender neutral, and provides an accurate depiction of a fair salary based on the skills needed for the position, along with the responsibilities involved.

In Minnesota, comparable worth laws are heavily enforced.  Minnesota state law requires employers report wage requirements from all government subdivisions, such as school districts, cities, and counties throughout the entire state.  The Minnesota Compensation Division is a government division that was created to enforce these laws across the state.

Comparable Worth and Legal Aid

Despite the heavy enforcement of Minnesota’s state laws on comparable worth, some employers often still partake in these unfair practices.  If you believe that your pay is not a fair rate, or that your employer may be partaking in unlawful practices, you should not hesitate to bring your concerns to light.  It is your civil right to view government collected data regarding employment and compensation in order to decipher whether or not you are being paid fairly.
