Minnesota MCL Tear Attorney

Located on the inside of the knee attaching the femur to the fibula, the medial collateral ligament (MCL) is one of four ligaments that provide the knee with stability and support and prohibits the knee from bending inward.

A tear to the MCL can be caused by direct impact from the side and is seen in many slip and fall and motor vehicle accidents.  An MCL tear shows signs of localized pain, swelling, bruising and could also present potential instability in the knee.

The three different grades of MCL tears are:

  • Grade 1 MCL Tear – a partial tear showing a few symptoms. Treatment is recommended through rest, applying ice and taking anti-inflammatory medication.  Recovery time from this type of MCL tear is typically 1 – 2 weeks.
  • Grade 2 MCL Tear – a partial tear showing moderate symptoms. Stability in the knee is worse when turning or moving and pain and swelling are more present than in a Grade 1 tear.  Doctors may recommend wearing a hinged knee brace for support and elevation of the knee is recommended whenever possible to reduce blood flow to the injury.  Recovery time from this type of tear is about 3 – 4 weeks.
  • Grade 3 MCL Tear – a complete tear to the MCL where significant pain, swelling and instability is present. Doctors may recommend wearing a knee immobilizer for the first 10 days of the injury, followed by a hinged knee brace for additional support.  Surgery may also be recommended if the ACL has also been torn and full recovery time for this type of tear is approximately 3 – 4 months.

MCL tears can be very painful and debilitating, depending on the severity of the injury.  In many cases, recovering from this injury results in having to take unpaid time off from work to focus on treatment and rehabilitation.  Losing wages make it difficult to pay for those medical expenses and rehab treatments.

If you are suffering from an MCL injury because you were involved in an accident due to someone else’s negligence, it is important to seek legal advice as soon as possible to see if you could claim compensation for your injury.
