Who is Encore Capital/Midland? Is This A Scam?

Encore Capital Group, Inc, also known as Midland Credit Management or Midland Funding, is the largest publicly traded debt buyer in the United States. The company does business in fifteen countries worldwide. Midland Credit Management (which is now a subsidiary of Encore Capital Group) was founded over sixty years ago, in 1953. Though originally founded in Kansas, the collections agency is now based in San Diego, California. Additionally, they have offices in several states throughout the US, including one location in St. Cloud, Minnesota. In 2013, Encore Capital Group purchased another debt buying company which was known as Asset Acceptance.

Encore Capital/Midland has received many consumer complaints claiming Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) violations. Some consumer reviews have accused Encore/Midland of making false statements or representations in pursuit of debt collection. Other examples of alleged violations include attempting to collect a debt not owed, threatening to contact an employer and sharing information improperly, and improper communication tactics.

Nonetheless, Encore Capital/Midland is not a scam and they are in fact an authorized debt collection agency.
