Minnesota Patellar Tendon Repair / Reconstruction Attorney
Spanning from the top, front of the tibia to the base of the patella is the patellar tendon. Quadriceps tendon, patella, patellar tendon and tibia all work together, moving the knee from a flexed to an extended position. If the patella is pulled out of position by the quadriceps muscle then the patellar tendon will rupture causing intense pain and forcing the inability to extend the leg.
A patellar tendon can rupture from a severe slip and fall accident or a high impact car crash. Signs of a patellar tendon rupture include:
- severe pain and immediate bruising
- unable to bear weight
- unable to extend leg
- leg showing signs of deformity
Patellar tendon replacement surgery is the best option to treat a patellar tendon rupture because the tendon itself does not react well to repair.
Surgeons will drill a hole transversely through the base of the patella and use one end of a semitendinosus graft to suture to the patellar tendon (where it remains attached to the tibia) and thread the other end of the graft through the drilled hole in the patella and suture. This process pulls the patella back into place.
Complications can arise with this type of surgery like the patella fracturing, the graft being cut too short or the patellar tendon misaligning in the tibia.
Following reconstruction, the knee will be in a cast or brace for six weeks and then in a hinged brace for an additional six weeks. Through rehabilitation and physical therapy, full movement and quadriceps strength can be regained.
Knee injuries of any kind can be serious and result in taking time off from work to focus on recovery. If you are suffering from a knee injury due to a serious accident that wasn’t your fault, you could claim compensation to pay for your medical bills and lost wages.
