The spine is composed of tissue that extends from the skull to the pelvis and a column of 33 vertebrae that enclose and protect a cylinder of nerve tissues that create the spinal cord.  An intervertebral disc sits in between each of the vertebra and serves as a shock absorber.  One quarter of the length of the spinal column are discs.  The different types of vertebrae are:

  • thoracic vertebrae – the 12 bones between the lower back and the neck
  • cervical vertebrae – the upper most seven vertebrae of the neck
  • lumbar vertebrae – the five largest and strongest vertebrae in the lower back
  • The sacrum and coccyx contain the other nine vertebrae which are located at the base of the spine. The sacrum is five fused vertebrae and the coccyx (tailbone) is four fused vertebrae.

Most back injuries affect either the cervical or lumbar regions and back injuries can be caused by car accidents, motorcycle accidents or slip and fall accidents.  The different type of back injuries include:

  • soft tissue injury
  • compression fracture
  • burst fracture
  • facet joint injury
  • herniated disc / ruptured disc / bulging disc / slipped disc
  • spinal stenosis

A back injury can cause acute or chronic pain, in addition to muscle weakness, numbness or tingling in the extremities and lack of muscle coordination.  Severe back injuries can be life-altering.

(Acute pain is defined as a very sharp pain or a dull ache that is usually constant and can become severe.  Chronic pain is defined as deep, aching, dull burning pain that requires medical management.)
